Situated a stones throw from the Castle, Old Fishergate House is one of the oldest houses in St Andrews dating from around 1650. Originally it was five fisherman’s houses but it has been beautifully renovated to make one comfortable house. The house was awarded a Pride of Place Certificate in 2005 by the St Andrews Preservation Trust. The house is very well situated in North Castle Street with the University, Byre Theatre, shops and the golf courses all within walking distance. Angus and Jennifer Mitchell have lived here since 1988 although it was in Jennifer’s family since 1808 except for a period of 27 years from 1961. Many of the period details of the house have been kept intact and it has a natural welcoming charm creating a relaxed atmosphere and a haven from the bustling world outside. Old Fishergate House is a member of the Scottish Tourist Board and has a grading of 4 Stars for Bed and Breakfast accommodation. There are two suites in the house both with twin beds, en-suite facilities and a private sitting room. Bedrooms are individually furnished and create a feeling of spacious luxury. The current owners, Aileen & David Neill purchased Clarke Cottage in March 1982 and brought up their family in this historic residence. In 1993 the first extension to the property provided 4 en-suite twin bedrooms and this was the creation of Clarke Cottage Guest House. The Guest House was so popular that, in 1997 a further 3 en-suite double bedrooms and 2 en-suite twin bedrooms were added. In addition a residents lounge and dining conservatory were also provided. Additional car parking was necessary and this was provided at the rear of the Guest House. Clarke Cottage Guest House now has a total 6 en-suite twin bedrooms and 3 en-suite double bedrooms with a dining conservatory and residents lounge. All rooms have the usual facilities you would expect from a “High Grade” establishment. In addition, guests have a separate entrance giving them full flexibility to come and go as they please. The quiet, comfortable residents lounge is located mid-way through the Guest House and is ideal as a meeting place or for relaxing with a book or magazine.
