Nation House, Bisley, Nr Stroud, Gloucestershire

Three cottages were knocked together to create this wisteria-clad, listed village house, now a terrific B&B. Beams are exposed, walls are pale and hung with prints, floors are close-carpeted, the sitting room is formally cosy and quiet. Smart, comfortable bedrooms have patchwork quilts, low beams and padded seats at lattice windows; the bathroom is spotless and the small shower room gleaming. In summer, breakfast in the conservatory on still-warm homemade bread, local bacon and sausages, Brenda's preserves. The village is a Cotswold treasure, with two good eating places and with many walks from the door.
Bisley is the perfect centre to visit the Cotswold towns and villages. It is half an hour from Cheltenham (the Races and the Literary , Science and Music Festivals) half an hour from Gloucester (the Cathedral and the docks complex), twenty minutes from Cirencester (the centre of the Cotswolds) and an hour from Bath. There are many National Trust properties in the area and several beautiful gardens. The Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge and Westonbirt Arboretum are both within a short drive.
