Kilkenny has a range of attractions just waiting to be discovered. Kilkenny Castle is located on elevated ground beside the river at the south eastern end of the city. The castle was built in the thirteenth century on the site of an earlier fort. Kilkenny Castle provides guided tours, an art gallery, a café during summer, extensive grounds and a childrens play area. Also worth a visit is the Cicsterian abbey of Jerpoint, the magnificent 16th century Tudor building of Rothe House, whilst for those who enjoy craft there is the National Crafts Gallery close to the castle.
