Our historic public house in the village of Barton-under-Needwood. You cannot miss the Shoulder of Mutton public house when you visit Barton-under-Needwood. It is in the centre of the village facing the small green and St. James' Church. It is the epitome of the classic village green scene. You can enjoy a wide range of excellent food and drink served in a gem of a building, dating back, in part, to 1640. The interior is grand with a superbly carved stone fireplace in the hall, original oak panelling in the bar, a stunning wide staircase that rises from the hall for the full three floors allowing a spectacular view of the chandelier on the top floor, a magnificent fireplace in the lounge, together with original fireplaces of considerable interest and splendour in some other rooms and a history dating back to Saxon Times. A number of rooms are available, each with their own distinctive style - from the Four Poster Room with its sumptuous bed, the bright Summer Room with heated tiled floor and powerful body shower, to beamed rooms at the top of the house. The Heart of England Excellence Awards organised by Tourism West Midlands and Advantage West Midlands are presented annually to the cream of the region’s tourism businesses. Colton House won The Best Bed and Breakfast Award which were announced at a gala dinner and ceremony held on 11 November at Birmingham’s ICC. Colton House has been awarded a five star guest house certification, in addition to a breakfast award from the AA, and also a five star guest house and a silver award from the Enjoy England national tourist board.
