The Sunday Times has just chosen Glenholme Country House as one of the Britain’s 50 best affordable places to stay. Located in Kirkcudbright in the most beautiful part South West Scotland, Glenholme offers stunning B&B accommodation in a peaceful and elegant guesthouse. Originally built in 1891, the character driven house offers high quality accommodation in an excellent location, making us a superb base from which to explore.
Our charming and luxurious guesthouse is a perfect holiday destination if you want a memorable experience, surrounded by rolling countryside in an idyllic part of Scotland. We have 3 double rooms with four poster beds and 1 large twin room. All are designed and decorated in a way which harks back to the solid comfort of the late Victorian era when the house was built, and all are named after well-known political figures from the period. At the same time, they each benefit from creative, newly-designed bathrooms and wireless internet.
Glenholme Country House has one-and-a-half acres of well maintained gardens where guests can stroll and enjoy sitting in the sun. There are many different areas of the garden for guests to enjoy: lawns and formal gardens descending in terraces to a shrubbery with some rare plants; a wild, wooded area where rooks colonise the treetops; and a pond with flag irises and water-lilies.
Breakfast is served in the dining room, offering freshly pressed orange juice, tea or coffee, brown or white toast and different kinds of home-made jams. There is a selection of fresh fruit and yoghurts, and a choice of muesli, bran flakes and we can make porridge. We offer a delicious cooked breakfast and you can create your own personal combination from eggs (boiled, fried, poached or scrambled – or duck eggs, if they are available), bacon, sausages, black pudding, mushrooms, tomatoes. Or you can simply ask for a bit of everything. We also offer dinner in the evening on most days, using excellent local produce and vegetables from the garden whenever possible. Please let us know if you would like to eat in. We will tailor our service to suit your needs and ask about your likes and dislikes and build a menu to suit. Vegetarian meals can be provided too. We welcome one night bookings, but ask that guests bookings for one night only take dinner as well wherever possible.
Kirkcudbright (pronounced Ker-coo-bree) is a small fishing port which sits on the estuary of the River Dee on the southern coast of Dumfries and Galloway in South West Scotland. It is a quiet town set amid gentle, rolling countryside. Its south-facing location, looking across the Solway Firth towards the Isle of Man, and the influence of the Gulf Stream mean that Kirkcudbright enjoys a particularly mild climate – something reflected in the rich pastures, the wooded valleys as well as the remarkable number of gardens and nurseries in the area. Kirkcudbright is exactly a mile – about twenty minutes’ walk along the banks of the River Dee – from Glenholme Country House. It is only a small town, with a population of less than 4,000, but it is the centre for a remarkable number of attractions and activities. It is also a thriving community with old-fashioned butcher’s shops, 2 bakeries, an excellent fish shop (which is also a fish and chip shop in the evening), pubs, coffee shops, an interesting antique shop, a bookshop and a traditional post office.
